More about this plan

A date that earns you brunch. In winter the Reykjavík sun comes up late enough to make this romantic instead of cruel — you can roll out at a civilised 9am and still be at the Grótta lighthouse before first light. Bundle up; the wind on the Seltjarnarnes tip is the serious kind.

Stand on the rocks and watch the light hit Esja across the bay. Eider ducks, no one else around. If the tide's out you can walk the causeway to the little island, but keep an eye on the water.

Drive back into Vesturbær and warm up at Kaffi Vest — a tiny neighbourhood café with strong coffee, proper bread, and a locals-only feel. You'll both have a story before 10am and the rest of the day is yours.
