Reykjavík
Punk Museum + dive-bar crawl
A museum inside a former public toilet, followed by Björk's old haunt. Works best on a Thursday.
More about this plan
Downtown Reykjavík has, improbably, an Icelandic Punk Museum inside a former underground public toilet on Bankastræti. It takes twenty minutes to walk through and is unreasonably good — handwritten zines, listening stations, wall-to-wall posters from the '80s Icelandic scene that gave us Björk.
From there it's a short walk to Kaffibarinn, the red-doored bar Björk used to hang out at (and co-owned). Settle in for a drink. If the night wants to keep going, roll on to Röntgen for the basement dance floor or Prikið for the late-night crowd and the best grilled cheese in 101.
Best Thursday through Saturday. Wear the jacket you actually like.
The plan, stop by stop
- 1
Icelandic Punk Museum
A tiny, brilliant museum built inside a former underground public toilet. Listening stations, zines, and the full history of 80s Icelandic punk.
- 2
Drinks at Kaffibarinn
The red-doored bar Björk co-owned. Low ceilings, loud music, correct level of grime.
- 3
Nightcap at Röntgen or Prikið
Pick your poison: Röntgen for the basement dance floor, Prikið for the late-night grilled cheese and hip-hop.
